cup red wine

cup beef broth

bay leaves

Instructions
1: Preheat oven to 350°F. 2: Brush both sides of French bread with olive oil. 3: Bake bread for 10 minutes on each side and let cool. 4: In a Dutch oven, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat until bubbly. 5: Add sliced onions and cook until softened (about 10 minutes). 6: Add sugar, salt, and pepper to the onions. 7: Cook onions until they reach a deep caramel color (about 45 minutes), stirring occasionally. 8: Stir in thyme and red wine, cooking until completely reduced. 9: Add beef broth and bay leaves, bringing to a boil. 10: Reduce to low heat and let simmer for 5-10 minutes. 11: Pour soup into oven-safe bowls. 12: Top each bowl with baked sliced bread and 1/2 cup of Gruyere cheese. 13: Place bowls in the broiler until cheese is nice and melted. 14: Enjoy!View original recipe
